Overview

Holistic Biorefinery Platform

BlueBioChain will develop (TRL2) and apply (TRL5) a holistic biorefinery platform bridging the gap along the blue bioeconomy value chain, from biomass to products and markets and consumers.

The project will last 24 months and will provide an intelligent wastewater valorization system using microalgae for the pilot production of 3 categories of high market value products, namely (i) cosmeceuticals (skin cream), (ii) food additives (food coloring agents for novel, convenient meat, and dairy analogues) and (iii) zero-waste aquaculture farms (aquafeed for fish/arthropods feed); thus, addressing three major global challenges of the future; sustainable waste management, tackling water scarcity and lack of food for the growing global population.

Work Plan

BlueBioChain is 24 months project and is comprised by 7 work packages (WP). The WPs feed into each other, as well as deliver independent research results at the highest level

WP1

Project management
(i) Consortium management activities; (ii) Coordination of the bodies; (iii) Ensure the project management procedures are implemented; (iv) Coordination with and reporting to the BlueBio Cofund

WP2

Microalgae cultivation in wastewater
(i) Valorize wastewater by optimal cultivation of valuable microalgae; (ii) Identify most efficient algal strains; (iii) Optimise working conditions of photobioreactors; (iv) Develop operational guidelines; (v) Overcome limitations for process up-scaling

WP3

Production of high-added value products
(i) Formulation and development of cosmeceutical products; (ii) Exploitation of astaxanthin and carotene as food additives; (iii) Development of a zero-waste aquaculture farm; (iv) Monitor resource efficiency impact and further develop market analysis, projection scenarios, and value chains.

WP4

Model based process optimization
(i) Develop a robust mathematical model that accurately represents the growth of microalgae; (ii) Develop advanced model-based optimization strategies that can maximize the biomass yield.

WP5

Food safety/security
(i) Perform a microbial prevalent assessment in microalgae; (ii) Perform a thorough molecular analysis based on high throughput sequencing; (iii) Assess the concentration of chemical hazards in treated wastewater and microalgal products; (iv) Assess the quality of food/feed in relation to their shelf life

WP6

Sustainability and Traceability analyses
(i) Explore sustainability and environmental impact; (ii) Identify & analyse existing perceptions and acceptance levels; (iii) Design and develop the BlueBioChain e-marketplace; (iv) Provide information related to alternative products; (v) Mapping the environmental impact of the whole supply chain.

WP7

Innovation-Communication-Dissemination
(ι) Raise awareness; (ii) Inform & engage individual stakeholders, organizations, industries etc.; (iii) Ensure the exploitation and sustainability of BlueBioChain results beyond the end of the project; (iv) Facilitate & ensure commercial exploitation of the foreground knowledge generated during BlueBioChain; (v) Implement efficient strategies and instruments for wide communication, education, and dissemination of BlueBioChain outputs
